Guidelines for training sessions:

  • Chairpersons
    • The chairperson will usually be a Consultant representative from the department responsible for the session. As chairperson, you are representing the group and coordinating the session. This may require drawing up a specific program, presenting and allocating tasks as appropriate.
    • Speakers should be welcomed and formally introduced and the chairperson should lead questions and try to ensure discussions remain lively but relevant. Thank speakers at the end of their talk.
    • Speakers should, where possible, provide a short answer question based on their talk for use at the end of term quiz.
    • Prior to the afternoon ensure that all speakers are able to attend and have the equipment they need (and to bring cakes!). This should be done minimum 1 week before to allow time for alternative arrangements if speakers are unable to attend.
    • On the day they must ensure that the session starts promptly and runs to time. If the organized events end before 4.30pm, the chairperson must coordinate a suitable activity until time is up – for example last case I saw, small group discussions.
    • Feedback forms should be made available by the chairperson( available from Ellen Jone Secretary at Heartlands or download from the website) , ensure that these are distributed and completed, these are very useful things to take to your RITA

Each session will cover the given topic using relevant case presentations, audit, ctr’s, journal club, best BETS, management issues etc. where appropriate. The afternoon will not be based solely upon powerpoint presentations but should utilize a variety of teaching modalities; buzz groups, short answers, case presentations, small group work etc.

The sessions will usually be divided into three parts – two hour-long lectures/activities, plus one half hour spent on one of the following:

  • Guideline presentations:
    • Set of published or accumulated guidelines
    • Succinct and cogent summary
    • Examples are – DVLA, NICE head injury, BTS asthma, etc
    • Should be set out clearly in a word document for handouts
    • These will then be published on the website – after a while, we should have a database of quick and easy guidelines for revision and reference

  • Best Evidence Topics:
    • The aim is to familiarize ourselves with the important EM-relevant papers from the last ~5 yrs for each specialty
    • Each session will cover the papers related to a specific clinical problem – eg AMI, syncope
    • A succinct summary of each paper and how it’s changed practice
    • Probably 5-8 papers a go
    • Should be set out clearly in a word document for handouts
    • These will then be published on the website to provide another resource for revision

  • Case presentation and discussion:
    • A 10-15 minute (maximum) case presentation – by a junior trainee
    • An evidence-based discussion of the clinical problem by a senior trainee (15-20 minutes)
    • Questions and discussion
    • Word document summary for website

  • Critical appraisal:
    • Papers will be provided with plenty of notice to allow everyone to read the paper before the session – time should not be wasted reading the papers on the afternoon of teaching – to get the most from the experience, read the papers before arrival!  Papers should be relevant to EM, but not from EMJ or BMJ as trainees should already be reading and critically appraising these articles!
